New 92.9 The Game Atlanta Braves Insider Joe Patrick joined Jon Chuckery and Randy McMichael to preview Spring Training and the 2019 season.

Patrick on the Braves starting rotation, “Heading into Spring Training the thing to keep an eye on is which one of this prospects will step up. You got two righties and two lefties. All of these guys are super talented. Some guys have had off the field issues and some have dealt with injuries. They are kind of battling for one spot but I think two spots could be there for the taking. We have seen what Julio Teheran is and one of these younger guys could take his spot.”

Patrick on realistic expectations for Brian McCann, “I wouldn’t expect a ton from Brian McCann. Right now at catcher you’re playing a waiting game. We have talked about the Braves arriving ahead of schedule but Braves fans are upset when they see the J.T. Realmuto being traded to the Phillies. What you are looking for out of Brian McCann is veteran leadership. It’s sort of the same thing with Josh Donaldson. These deals are very low risk for the Braves.”

Patrick on if the Braves have done enough to close the gap on the rest of the National League, “You have messaging from upper management that says they are going to spend money from all of the money they have gotten from The Battery. What we have seen this off-season though is that other teams in the division have made ambitious moves and the Braves haven’t done as much. I think the Braves are in wait and see mode with the roster they have. I think at the end of the day the Braves are in better position to trade for talent as opposed to spending money in free agency. I do think they will continue to make moves and it will be fascinating to watch throughout the season.”

Patrick on Johan Comargo’s role, “I really like Comargo. I think he surprised a lot of people last year. I think he will have big role during the season especially with Josh Donaldson’s injury issues. Comargo will have to continue to develop. He also could be a very valuable trade asset.”

Patrick on the back end of the Braves bullpen, “I think the Braves will go with both (A.J. Minter and Arodys Vizcaino). I’m glad to hear what Minter said. With Craig Kimbrel still out there and with the Braves having money to spend that’s where things get frustrating because there is an obvious and a proven guy out there on the market but the team is staying put.”
