President of the Atlanta United Darren Eales joined Dukes & Bell to talk about the CONCACAF Champions League, if he’s worried about the teams slow start, and Miguel Almiron’s fast start with Newcastle.

Eales talked about the experience of the first game against Herediano.

“It was amazing, crazy to see our fans down there.” Said Eales “The takeaway for me was my first game in the Champions league with Tottenham we were down 3 nil 20 minutes into the game I was thinking we were going to be eliminated and then we got an away goal and the next week we won 4 nil and advanced.”

Darren told the guys why it was difficult completing the transfer of Miguel Almiron to Newcastle.

“It was difficult, what makes it difficult is the MLS structure, the way the roster rules are made it tricky.” Eales said “Traditionally the league hadn’t sold it’s players at a very high value, so we wanted to set a value and it was really important to get that value. It was really important for us and the league to get a fair value to set that bar and it helps with the next transfer.”

Eales told the guys that Miggy’s success is vital to the MLS.

“We need Miggy to do well in the premier league because what it shows that this league has top talent. So the better Miggy does at Newcastle the better it is for the MLS.”

When asked about the slow start on Thursday.

“I think it was more about execution, I think they would be the first to admit they didn’t execute.” Eales said “We saw this last year, we lost 4 nil to Houston to start the MLS season. I think we didn’t show the defensive discipline that we’ve worked on and the lads know that but we got the away goal and look forward to getting back in front of our fans on Thursday.”
