The Atlanta Falcons sit at 1-4 and at the bottom of the NFC South as they prepare for a crucial divisional match up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-2) on Sunday.

CBS Sports NFL Analyst, and former Giants quarterback, Phil Simms joined John and Hugh on Thursday and was asked if the Falcons could could climb out of this hole and into a playoff spot.

"Right now, I would say 'no.'" And offered up a pretty succinct answer as to why.

"When you defense is just giving you no chance when your offense is scoring like they are," Simms said. The defense is without Pro Bowl strong safety Keanu Neal (knee) and free safety Ricardo Allen (achilles) for the season. Pro Bowl linebacker Deion Jones (foot) is also on IR but can return for action against the Dallas Cowboys game in Week 10.

"Now look, I don't care how bad your defense is, to lose games like you did against the Bengals, it's just not your time."

Simms said it's hard for a Falcons defense that's giving up so many big plays, and getting gashed by their opponents now in the run game, to help you win games.

"No matter how good you are on the offensive side, you're going to have three or four games in the year that are not going to be very good. When you're that way, can the defense win the game for you? Right now, I don't see their defense having a chance to win games for them."
