The Atlanta Falcons released defensive end Derrick Shelby on Friday, the team announced through a statement. This offical news comes shortly after NFL Network analyst Ian Rapoport announced that Atlanta would cut tight end Levinie Toilolo.

Both moves are assumed cost-cutting measures as the Falcons prepare to start the new NFL year on March 14.

According to the website Over the Cap, by releasing Shelby the Falcons will save $3.25 million against their 2018 salary cap.

Shelby arrived in Atlanta after spending four seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He signed a four-year, $18 million contract. In 22 games (18 starts) with the Falcons, Shelby amassed 22 tackles and one sack.
