Future Hall of Fame quarterback and former top NFL draft pick Peyton Manning told ESPN that the projected No. 1 overall selection in this year’s draft, LSU’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow, reached out to him for advice.

Manning said he told Burrow to approach his professional career like a “marathon.”

“Look, I lost more games my rookie year than I had in my entire high school and college career combined,” Manning told ESPN. “I threw (28) interceptions. That's still an NFL record. If Joe wants to break that… I'd be OK with that. We'd still be friends.

“But I tried to learn a lot that year. I played every game. Jim Mora never took me out. I learned some things in the fourth quarter of those blowouts about what it took to be an NFL quarterback.”

Burrow is expected to be drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals who hold the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

He, like Manning did in 1998, is coming off of an impressive season that saw him help lead LSU to a national championship and break several single season records including most touchdown passes with 60.

The NFL draft kicks off Thursday and runs through Saturday.
