Coach Steve Lavin from FOX Sports and the PAC-12 Network joined The Midday Show with John Michaels and Randy McMichael (filling in for Rick Kamla) to talk about the NCAA tourney and this week's conference tournaments. Coach Lavin compared championship week to rebirth for teams because all teams restart at zero to get their chance to make it to the dance by winning your conference.

Lavin mentioned that there is a saturation of basketball because we see every game now because of all the cable, station options and mobile choices.

Coach Lavin described how Virginia has played this season and if the Cavaliers could possibly win it all. He doesn’t think North Carolina has the firepower to win it all, but expects them to make a run. Lavin considers Duke to have a very talented team and thinks the Blue Devils have a chance to compete for the title.

There have always been challenges in amateur sports regarding bagmen and players being paid, Coach Lavin reminded us. He thinks the investigation will stimulate rule changes and better enforcement of modernized rules. He says we haven’t had to stay up with the evolution of how much college athletics has changed, but he is optimistic things will change and get better. The rules should be modernized along the same lines as they did with Olympic athletes, Lavin argues.

Coach Lavin broke down Arizona’s DeAndre Ayton’s play and what he can do with the ball and how he sees the court. Lavin called him a franchise-changing player.
