The Atlanta Falcons played 11-on-11 during Day 4 of training camp on Monday. The scrimmage allowed the guys to compete against one another in real game scenarios. Following practice, John Fricke and Hugh Douglas had a chance to chat with veteran CB Desmond Trufant. Trufant talks about the depth on defense, and already has high praise for two new rookies.

What is he focused on during training camp?

"Getting back to the basics, the fundamentals; tackling and making big plays. And being a leader. I'm one of the older guys in the room, and the young guys look up to me so just trying to help [them] in any way I can."

On the addition of rookie WR Calvin Ridley

“He’s real crafty. You don't really see that from a lot of young receivers. You can tell he's worked with a lot of guys, and he's polished. He's explosive; once he gets the ball in his hands, he's a home run hitter. I'm excited to see him out there."

Given the veteran defensive backfield, what are you expecting this season?

“We’re trying to be the best; we're striving for greatness. We have a lot of talent back there so we have no excuse to not be the best in the league.”

Is there more pressure this year than others to get to the Super Bowl?

“I believe you create your own pressure. For me, I know we have talent and we can do a lot of damage.”

How good can this unit be?

“Great man, we have talent at every level. Outsiders are going to say what they say but that just comes with it. we know We know we have talent, and we know we can do a lot of damage so that's what we focus on."

What are you seeing out of rookie CB Isaiah Oliver?

"He's real long, and he's physical. And he's smart so he's picked up the playbook really fast. I'm excited to see him out there in a live game situation, and he's definitely going to help us back there."

In closing, Trufant added there’s no excuses, and while he understands they have to produce, he’ll looking forward to the challenge.
