Trae should win ROY, not Doncic

After Trae Young hit Saturday night's game-winning bucket with 0.1 left to give the Hawks the win over the 76ers, John Fricke and Hugh Douglas are more conviced than ever that Trae should be the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

John admitted that Doncic once had a huge lead, but that has diminished to essentially a dead heat.

"Since Christmas, Trae Young has been the best rookie in the NBA. Now, before Christmas it was Luka Doncic. It's really close, they might end up co-ROY in the NBA."

Hugh agreed, but focused on Trae's growth over the course of the season.

"To see him from summer league to now, it's amazing. And you see the confidence that has built in this young man as a player. He's at the point now where he feels there's nothing he can't do or a moment that's too big for him. That's a huge jump in growth from the beginning of the season to now. That's huge."

Hugh also wonders how biased we are being in Atlanta and who else may not have the same thoughts about Trae Young that we do.

"We have boots on the ground, we see him every day. The national sentiment might be totally different because they don't see him every day. At the forefront of it all, all you heard about was Luka Doncic. Hopefully this isn't left up to the fans, the NBA realizes that and gives him the props that he deserves."

John and Hugh apparently aren't the only people who think this award should be given to Trae. SportsCenter featured a tweet with Donovan Mitchel, Kyle Kuzma, and Blake Griffin sharing their thoughts on who should win the Rookie of the Year Award.

Hugh also feels that the season Trae is having could have an impact on the Hawks hopes of  landing some bigger-name free agents.

"Having players want to come to Atlanta. They're going to want to play because Trae Young is going to feature them. Trae Young is going to get them the ball."

John adds that if you take a look back at the moves that brought the Hawks Trae Young, you have to be extremely happy with the job done by the front office on this deal

"This is why Travis Schlenk made the trade, you can get 6'7 guys, you can't get point guards. The Doncic trade is already a push at the very least, and if you get lucky in this draft, if you get the Mavcericks pick, you win it by a mile."
