D&B: Freeman Is The Key To Matt Ryan Success

Dukes & Bell
Tuesday, June 25th
In the Falcons report we revisited our conversation on could the Falcons start two rookies on the offensive lineman.

It was time for the “Strong Arm Story.” Braves analyst Nick Green joined Dukes & Bell to talk about last night’s scuffle, what Josh Donaldson brings to the Braves lineup, and has Julio Teheran reverted? Nick told the guys the Flowers-Contreras incident made for good entertainment. “It was interesting.” Green said “I didn’t see what happened initially, but I thought it was kind of petty, I don’t know if Flowers said something or just smiled but it set him off. I was caught off guard that he went around the bases so demonstratively and then yelled at Flowers at home plate but it made for good entertainment that’s for sure.” “I like it too. I was more old school three or four years ago, but I like people showing their emotions now there is a time and place for it, but I like showing emotion. I do like the intensity, but Green said Josh Donaldson brings an much needed edge to the Braves. “I like that from Donaldson.” Green said “I think it’s something this team needs, who knows if the other teams are ok with that, but it’s something that’s added to this roster, he plays with an edge and when he’s going well you’re going to see that more often than not.” “I want to see him bounce back to form the four starts that were bad. We haven’t seen him have back to back good starts in a while, I just want to see him command the strike zone better and throw better pitches inside the strike zone. I want to see him attacking the strike zone, be attacking with his fastball, I don’t want him to look at the elements and say he has to be perfect, because that’s the thing with Max Fried he doesn’t have to be perfect he’s got such good stuff.” When asked about Julio’s last two starts. “Julio needs to get back on track.” Green said “The last two starts it’s almost like he’s reverted back to the old Julio, whenever he was on that streak he wasn’t giving in and I feel like he’s been giving in a little more, for this rotation Julio has to be good.” “I think any series is important. You don’t want to look back and say we got swept in a four game series in Chicago, you can see a split being successful series, the Braves have won five series in a row so I’m not real worried about this series other than you don’t want to lose the division by one game and look back and say this was the series that cost you.” “You’ve got to go get a closer. I don’t think he’s a closer, I think he would be great in the seventh or eighth inning, but who is out there and what does it cost you because you know Alex is going to make a move. When you look at the bullpens around baseball, the relievers era in the month of june for all of baseball is like 4.72 so it’s just not the Braves.”
